The
STAT Communications Center has three departments:
- STAT MD
- STAT MedEvac
Communications
- Pittsburgh Medic
Command
- The Communications
Center is staffed by 36 full-time and 6 casual staff members.
- 10-12 staff members
work throughout a 24 hour period
- There are 12 work
stations, equipped with the latest and most up to date equipment, capable
of performing interchangeable duties for all departments.
- All phone and radio
lines within the Communications Center are recorded. Voice Print is
the recording system utilized by STAT MedEvac (Voice
Print International, Inc.). The recording system is
instantly accessible not only just within the communications center, but
throughout the entire STAT MedEvac operation via the computer network
system.
- A Medical Command
physician is assigned to the Communications Center 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week, 365 days a year. These physicians handle medical consults
for the three divisions within the communications center.
Medic
Command:
- Pittsburgh Medic Command
processed approximately 36,000 medical command consults last year.
- The Communications
Specialists activate the Trauma Team for UPMC. There are protocols
and established guidelines that are referenced for all activations.
- The communications
center is the initial answering point for Critical Incident Stress
Debriefing (CISD).

STAT MedEvac:
- During the course of
2004 the STAT Communications Center processed just under 22,000 requests
for medical service.
- The Communications
Center has a satellite based tracking system that has the ability to see
any and every movement of an air medical
aircraft.
- The tracking system is
also capable of 2-way text messaging in addition to the radio
communications.
- Each helicopter is
equipped with a satellite phone.
- There are 12 radio tower
sites that provide aircraft communications to STAT MedEvac
for medical purposes and encompasses 4 states:
Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Maryland.

- Aeromed Software enables
the Communications Center to quickly identify the closest:
Direct Air Carrier aircraft,
Direct Air Carrier predesignated landing zone, town, hospital,
trauma center, airport, road intersections, as well as many other
associated queries.
- All flight information
is communicated to every crew member on the aircraft through 2 different
simultaneous methods.
- The dispatching
software automatically sends flight data to each crew member via text
pager.
- A Klaxton alarm at the
base site is activated via radio. The base site radio
automatically sends a tone back to the Communications Center notifying
the Communications Specialist that the Klaxton alarm was properly
activated and that the flight crew was alerted of the flight request.
The Communications Specialist then notifies the
Direct Air Carrier of the flight request via specific radio
verbiage.
- The Communications
Center is also capable of organizing, planning and executing domestic and
international fixed wing medical transport
missions including: flight routings, ground transportation, and
basic customs information.

- New software is being
designed in-house for Pittsburgh Medic Command and
STAT MD.
