Whether you like it or not, the holidays are right around the corner. While the idea of the holiday season may look nice in a Hallmark movie, we know it’s anything but that in the real world. Especially if you work in the medical or public safety field. It can be tough on your body; Physically, mentally and emotionally. While there is no easy fix to working through the holiday season, here are five tips to help you keep in check and stay on the right path to working during the most hectic time of the year:

  1. Plan ahead. Easier said than done, especially when it comes to the healthcare field, but the more prepared you are for the chaos the better. Start decorating, cooking, cleaning and shopping ahead of time, so you don’t have to stress during your work day thinking about all you have to do after the day is done. The earlier the better! It’s never too soon to start stocking up for whatever you think you might need – you won’t have to do any last minute shopping during the busiest shopping days of the year.
  1. Be flexible. Stepping into the medical field, you know that a 9a-5p position is out of the question. Healthcare is a 24/7, year-round commitment, but during this time of the year, it’s difficult to find time to see friends and family who do have those positions. Be flexible with your time and think outside the box when it comes to your holiday traditions. If you have to push back your Thanksgiving dinner by a day or open Christmas presents on Christmas Eve instead of day, so be it. While it might not be tradition, you’re still able to celebrate and might even be starting a new tradition.
  1. Get creative with co-workers. You’re not the only one in the same boat of working during the holidays; Your coworkers are right there with you in the chaos. This might be the year to start some new traditions that can bring up the spirit of your workplace. An “Ugly Sweater” contest or a funny gift swap can ease some of the stress of working during a hectic time of the year, while also adding joy to your workday.
  1. Be compassionate. Emotions are intense around this time of the year. Factor in someone who is sick or a loved one being in the hospital; It’s not hard to see how someone could be extremely stressed. It’s important to recognize everyone is going through something and all respond emotionally in different ways. A universal gift that you can give to all this holiday season is practicing patience and showing compassion.
  1. Check yourself mentally. Your mindset will determine how well your workday goes. Whether you approach holiday work as the greatest gift you can give to others or a complete burden depends on the positivity you’re adding to your mindset. Making the best of every situation is the healthiest approach and will help to guide you through the holiday season.

Again, there is no easy fix to the stresses of working through the holiday season. With a little bit of planning and flexibility, you might be able to work through it with more ease. Know you’re not alone, your coworkers are right there with you. Show some compassion towards them and others, because you don’t know what their journey is like. Also, don’t forget to check your mindset. Positivity is the key to getting through any tough time in life, so look for all of the golden moments and keep your head up. And also, Happy Holidays!
