By Ed DeWitt

It was all part of her plan. Seventeen years after a life-changing experience aboard a STAT MedEvac helicopter, Trista Weiss, RN, UPMC senior professional flight nurse II, now works for the very team that she credits with setting her on a path toward a career of service.

Trista’s journey in health care started with a scary bike accident. “I have both an older and younger brother, and when we were growing up, we all competitively raced BMX bikes,” she said. “When I was 8, we were training for some races. We were riding down our street and my brothers were ahead of me, and I was trying to catch up. I lost control of my bike. I’m not sure what happened. I just remember my steering wheel kind of going crazy, and next thing you know, I was unconscious.”

The way Trista’s bike landed resulted […]

CAMTS Re-Accreditation

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems will conduct an accreditation site visit of the Center for Emergency Medicine – STAT MedEvac program on September 21 and 22, 2021.

The purpose of the site visit will be to evaluate the program’s compliance with nationally established medical transport standards. The site visit results will be used to determine whether, and the conditions under which accreditation should be awarded to the program.

CAMTS accreditation standards deal with issues of patient care and safety of the transport environment. Anyone believing that he or she has pertinent or valid information about such matters may request a public information interview with the CAMTS site surveyors at the time of the site visit. Information presented at the interview will be carefully evaluated for relevance to the accreditation process. Requests for public information interviews must be made in writing […]

(Air) Crafting the Right Name

The Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania (CEM) was founded in 1978 and is among the world’s leading organizations in emergency medicine, education, and research.

STAT MedEvac was birthed in 1984 as STAT and continues to soar transporting critically sick and injured patients each and every day. Today, it has evolved into one of the largest single operated and dispatched air-medical transport systems in the United States. The clinical arm of the CEM has a vibrant story, and how the name, STAT MedEvac, came to be is just as interesting.

Dr. Walt Stoy has been with Center for Emergency Medicine for 40 years and counting and knows the story behind the name. Dr. Stoy is a professor and was the founding director of the Emergency Medicine Program for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. From 1977 through 1981, he was […]

Putting the “Care” in Critical Care Air Ambulance Service

James “Jim” Houser, along with his expansive team of amazing critical care providers, puts the “care” in critical care air ambulance service at STAT Medevac. STAT MedEvac is a critical care transport system and is the clinical arm of the Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania (CEM). It has evolved into one of the largest single operated and dispatched air-medical transport systems in the United States with its operation of eighteen helicopter base sites and critical care ground base in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

On Nov. 1, 2020, Houser stepped into his role as UPMC’s president and CEO of CEM, and the opportunities have taken flight since then from the evolution of being a volunteer EMT/firefighter out of high school to his life calling as a leader at CEM.

Houser’s journey throughout the public safety sector has soared through opportunities and challenges […]

COVID-19 Pandemic

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, understandably stressful to many, does not negatively impact our mission. We are an organization of professionals who maintain and continuously improve a comprehensive system for efficiently transporting and safely caring for ill and injured people.

In response to the increasing numbers of COVID-19 exposures and persons under investigation (PUI) in Pennsylvania, and surrounding states, we are strictly following the guidelines recognized by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. Having said this, we proactively implemented strategies and procedures that will minimize exposure of COVID-19.

STAT MedEvac will remain at your service while embracing our five core values:

  • Quality & Safety
  • Dignity & Respect
